Joseph H. Pilates
WHAT IS PILATES? Pilates is one of the safest and most effective exercises
systems available.
A well kept secret since the 1940’s Pilates has evolved into a unique
workout method used by
athletes (including Pat Cash, the Essendon Football Club), dancers (Australian
Ballet Company)
and physiotherapist (Australian Institute of Sport). Although ones experience
of Pilates will differ
depending on the approach of the studio and its staff, generally Pilates
exercises include both mat
and Reformer based work. Movements are slow and precise and an emphasis on
breathing and
concentration leaves participants feeling rejuvenated and relaxed rather
than exhausted. The Pilates
“
reformer”provides some 500 exercises which simultaneously strengthen,
stretch and massage the
entire body. The fluid rocking motions have an added mental aspect, merging
action and awareness:
the mind/body exercise experience. Pilates is indeed a unique exercise experience.
AT
FITZROY PILATES STUDIO, we adopt a functional approach, first assessing
clients
followed by the introduction of progressively graded exercises and stretches.
The exercises can be
directed toward the treatment of dysfunction in the musculo-skeletal system
or prescribed to provide
challenging workouts for the most elite athletes. Our approach also integrates
Posture & Flexibility;
a system of muscle stretching techniques detailed in the books Overcome Neck
and Back Pain, and
Stretching and Flexibility by Kit Laughlin. The integration of Laughlin's
work increases the amount of
stretching experienced at Fitzroy Pilates Studio, and improves the stretching
aspect of Pilates original
work.
WHY DO PILATES AT FITZROY PILATES STUDIO? Clients first attend the studio for many different reasons. Some are attracted to the feel of the studio and indeed the focused concentration provides a sense of peace and mindfulness impossible in the midst of the excessive lycra, ego, and thumping beats of the conventional gym! Many see the value of customised exercises and the close monitoring that ensures correct performance and efficient results; our small class sizes of up to 6 clients ensure close supervision. Most importantly, it is the effectiveness of the Pilates and Posture & Flexibility combination, the emphasis on a balance of strength and suppleness, health, posture, alignment and longevity that has made the studio a popular place to practice the Pilates method. With the introduction of our new DVD series we now offer a unique home exercise program to supplement your studio sessions. Filmed at the studio, Innovations In Pilates is a collection of four instructional DVDs that can be used to accelerate your studio work.
WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM PILATES? Anyone can
benefit from Pilates based exercises. The diverse group of clients at FPS
represent the effectiveness
of Pilates
techniques. The studio
accommodates trades people suffering low back pain and workplace injuries,
amateur and professional
athletes and dancers from all disciplines, GP’s and specialist physicians.
Some clients are experiencing
medical conditions including chronic fatigue, obesity, asthma, cerebral palsy,
and postural complaints,
and people who just want to maintain their level of strength and fitness!
Whatever ones background,
Fitzroy Pilates studio clients develop strong, lean, flexible muscles, improved
breathing, reduced
incidence and risk of back pain and a balanced musculo-skeletal system. Achieved
through principles
of mobilisation of tight areas and stabilisation of weak areas; a state that
protects the body against
injury and progressive deformity. Clients report vastly improved physical
capacities, improved athletic
performance, relaxation and the control and elimination of pain.
