"Pilates has made me feel stronger, happier and calmer in body and mind since having my second baby. For any woman who wants to be toned and fit but can't stand aerobics, this is a highly respected, uncomplicated and enjoyable way to feeling physically and mentally healthy". Jo |
Following pregnancy, women naturally want to return to their pre-pregnancy weight, to improve their abdominal and general muscle tone and body image, and importantly need personal time and relaxation. Current literature (Clapp ‘Exercising through Pregnancy’) shows that Pilates type exercise in the post delivery period has beneficial effects for the mother and no adverse effects for the baby.
Here are a few points on the subject of exercise and childbirth, and on why Fitzroy Pilates studio has the right post natal program for you!
- Pilates exercises are SAFE for even previously sedentary women who are breast feeding their baby.
- Pilates exercises have no adverse effects on lactation. Strenuous aerobic exercise can have a negative effect on both composition and volume of breast milk, effecting infant growth rate.
- Studies indicate that the rate of weight loss and the decline in % of body fat does not differ between aerobic exercise and non-exercising groups post partum. (New England Journal of Medicine 1994). Pilates resistance training will increase lean muscle mass and bring about permanent changes in body shape and composition.
- The ‘calcium drain’ of breast feeding and prolonged oestrogen deficiency associated with lactation can result in osteopenia, (bone mineral loss and compromised skeletal integrity). Pilates exercise will improve skeletal mineralisation as a result of mechanical forces exerted by muscle contraction. Aerobic exercise imparts an insufficient skeletal stimulus.
- Scientific studies demonstrate that exercise for 60 minutes in post partum women was associated with a significant decrease in anxiety, depression and total mood disturbance as well as an increase in vigour.
- The stretching and laxity that occurs during pregnancy and delivery to the abdominal muscles, uterus, joints and supporting ligaments can be reversed exceedingly quickly with specific Pilates exercises.
- Stress incontinence can become a serious health issue post delivery. Up to 50% of women will experience life long incontinence and this figure increases with more births and longer and more complicated deliveries. Specific pelvic floor and abdominal exercises practiced in our program dramatically reduce incontinence.
